A.) Say your fear out loud. I am afraid that if there is dirt in my Bible that....then list your fear. This will help your other senses to pick up on this fear and they the other parts of the brain it triggers will question this belief. Challenge your belief. Ask yourself, what will happen if I just leave the dirt there. Sometimes I would do something to spite OCD. So you could actually put a few more specks of dirt on the Bible. Scrupulosity is the OCD that has to do with religion. God made dirt, we are made out of dirt, if there are some specks on the Bible, that's fine. God does not care. He certainly isn't going to punish you for allowing some dirt on the Bible, you just have the wrong belief system which is driven by fear. God does not want you to be afraid of Him, when the Bible says fear Him, it means to respect Him according to the Bible and there is no where where it says you can't get dirt on the Bible. Sure, you can wipe off the Bible, but if there is some remaining dirt, that's fine. The Lord is against people wasting their time doing useless things, and wiping microscopic particles off your Bible is not God's will for you, period. I know you can do it, I believe in you and You are a child of God's. He loves you and it is His will for you to stop doing this, so will you obey Him?

Question below
Q.) I just turned 21 last week. I am going away to a residential school, despite my severe OCD. The thought is that I need to be out of the house (and away from my mother\\\'s help) in order to get better (as well as to become more independent) -- but how will I cope with the stress of my OCD in this new and stressful living environment? What should I ask to be provided to me in terms of services (therapy) and supports to help me have a chance of being successful in this new environment/school?
A.) It's a good decision you are making by going away. People that stay at home and feed their OCD have a harder time getting over it. Here you are forcing yourself too and that is sometimes what people have to do. I am proud of you for having such courage. Yes, let faculty and staff know so that you diminish some of the pressure that you may feel. If they have a counselor, it probably won't hurt to go, but tell them that you don't want to keep reminding yourself of OCD, but you want to forget about it and that you don't need to deal with it because it's just made up. In fact, you are dealing with it by learning how to ignore this paper tiger ( this made up monster) I believe in you and you can do it! Remember never to give up, one of the keys to success is to "try until you are successful."

Question below
Q.) My maze of \\\"rules\\\" has been absolutely rigid, sometimes morphs into new ones, for 30 years. They are so wired into me, and I saw them as necessary to survive (I think some over-valued ideation is present, but I still see the irrationality in my mental construct.) Therapists and meds galore didn\\\'t help,am longtime member of ocd foundation, and exposure-response prevention always seemed brutal(tried it). My fears are so intense, I fall into persistent hysteria and depression if something happens against my controlled structure. How can I break from this stranglehold? I understand your approach, but I have such an entrenched case. I\\\'ve recently tried confronting some things in the top layer with some success, but the hard-core issues seem impenetrable. (Also, I want to get all you have to offer-- I like your simple, direct approach. I\\\'ve read about Acceptance Commitment Therapy, too, a program that seems compatible with your methods.) My 27-year relationship has crumbled because of this, and I\\\'m at a pivotal crossroads
A.) I can definitely appreciate your situation. I lost my girlfriend for a while because of OCD and my job. You see, I would just pace and do rituals instead of working. They liked me a lot so they would have kept me, but I felt like I was going to go crazy so I just quit completely. That was one of the worst things I could have done because it just gave me more time to ruminate and perform useless rituals.
It's a change in how you view your situation is what the doctor ordered so to speak. You need to change the way that you communicate with your subconscious mind. Stop giving yourself commands that reinforce your OCD. You've got to give your subconscious mind commands that will empower you and depower OCD behavior. Say things like, my case is easy, I claim freedom from OCD. I am stronger than my OCD. My resolve to clear myself of OCD is stronger than OCD. I control OCD thoughts at all times. This will command your subconscious which drives your emotions. You've got to really be dedicated and the hardest part is just saying the right things to yourself. We talk to ourselves all the time. I wonder if I turned off the iron. I wonder if I will make it on time to work, etc. Well I have great news for you, you can control that voice! So start replacing bad things you tell yourself with good things and after a while you will notice a marked improvement. After all, if you are feeding good commands to your subconscious mind which controls your emotions don't you think you'll improve? It's inevitable and forced.

married 15+ years happily...5 kids...
Q.) married 15+ years happily...5 kids.. good life very loving wife recently i have had anxiety about my wifes previous sexual experiences before we were married.. (unfortuanely i asked one day recently on how many and it has haunted me ever since .. i always knew but now really effecting me)... i have unwanted mental vivid images in my mind now with my wife being intimate with someone else.. ... my family has a history of depression and anxiety... i dont feel depressed .. very anxious, heart racing... clamy hands, feet loss of appetite... lost about 10 pounds in 10 days... not a big fan of meds.. lost my mom to suicide (manic depressant) in the early 90s and she was on all types of meds... any natural ways to conquer...? Please help
A.) I would first go to your doctor to make sure that it's just anxiety. Then when you confirm that, then give unconditional trust to your wife. Thinking about these things is not going to help, just trust her until you have some kind of evidence. I would not look for it, just know that the truth always comes out and if anything happens, you'll find out. I knew this girl who would spy on her boyfriend and drive herself crazy obsessing about what he was doing and who he was with. She actually drove him to cheating. So just trust her. The rapid weight loss is not healthy and you should see your doctor about that. Communicate more with your wife and you'll find her to be more understanding if you guys open up to eachother.

I think about what would happen if my parents died...
Q.) I think about what would happen if my parents died every night and often during the day. Thinking about it so much, I almost wish it would happen and I crave the sympathy and attention I would get from teachers and church leaders and friends. I keep saying over and over to my self \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'my parents will not die this year\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\' but it doesn\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t work. How do I stop thinking about it? it\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s driving me insane. I always harm myself if I feel like hurting others, even if I just want to verbally abuse someone. I have no compulsions though so know one knows I\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'m like this. It took me a year to get a diagnosis of aspergers syndrome so I don\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t trust the psychiatrists any more. They never do what they say they will. I get counselling but I\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'m too scared to share this with him incase he thinks I\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'ll be a murderer, I can\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t tell anyone. How do I stop?
A.) I used to have similar thoughts, as a lot of people. The reason that it's not commonly heard of is because most people don't share these scary thoughts, thinking that they will be baker acted or something. I can tell you this though, the fact that you are worried about it means that you are normal! This took me a while to get, but once I got it, It was like a light bulb lit up above my head just like in the cartoons. You see, once you see that this is just a fear, you no longer have to be afraid of it anymore. Most people think that a fear they have is something wrong with them and that is why they are so afraid! Once you realize that this is just a fear, well, that's easy to forget now, because fears are just made up, and yes our brain messes with us, all of us, normal people alike, it's just how it works. We are made in such a way that things we don't want to think about stick in our minds. That's just how it works! So you no longer have to hurt yourself. You are a child of God and He loves you and you are fearfully and wonderfully made!
So take action: When you have this fear, remind yourself that it is just a fear and that the normal human brain has a tendency to make us think about that which we don't want to. You are normal.

Obsessive compulsive disorder help!
Q.) I am now 30 years old and ever since I was in grade 3, I have had a tendency to tense up the back of my neck and scalp and inner ears, and the area above the ears, tensing my diaphragm thus breathe very irregularly, every other 30 seconds when I\\\'m awake, i would say. I\\\'ve had to consciously remind myself to slow down, take a deep breathe and not think about doing that, but that would last for a few minutes before I start that annoying habit again. It has caused me severe tension headaches and stiff shoulders which no masseuse or doctor could relieve for more than a day. Please help. Thank you!
A.) I used to focus on my breathing and I would feel like I would pass out and this was very disturbing for me. What a doctor did tell me was that if I passed out, my body would take over my breathing for me because it is involuntary when we are not conscious. Knowing this helped me to not fear it as much, knowing my brain would do the right thing no matter how afraid I was. Another thing that I did was some serious diversion. How I did this was, I would lie down in a comfortable position and I would watch a movie and try to notice the details in the movie, or I would play chess. A really strong diversion is to do minus problems in your head that requires you to think, like 17-9 or 22-6 or even addition, 35+7 or 12+35. These things require your consciousness and you cannot fully focus on your feelings while focusing on these things. These things work quickly. Another thing that I did was embrace these feelings, reminding yourself that they are only sensations and you can say to yourself, bring it on. Notice the little tinglings or pains or pressures and think about how your body is just reacting to anxiety by creating these little sensations. They cannot hurt you, they are just interesting. I also did this, I would say to myself, I am strong, I am healthy, I am brave. I also said different things that would come to mind, always say something that is in the present, don't say, I will be strong, no say what you want to be in the present tense, like if you already are, say I am strong, say I am healthy completely. Take control over what you want in your life by speaking it into your life. Stop being a bully to yourself and stand up to yourself and tell yourself how it's going to be...

Stop the obsessive compulsive thoughts!
Q.) Mostly my OCD flares up at a time when I am having a wonderful happy event. Some thought is going to pop up that will \\\"ruin\\\" the happy occassion. My wedding, someone elses name popped into my head. This devasted me for years. It is someone that I don\\\'t even like. My husband mentions one day while looking at a picture of our daughter that she looks like an ex boyfriend of mine whom I have had no contact with since we broke up before I met my husband. He says it jokingly, but OCD now tells me in thoughts \\\"maybe he isn\\\'t her father...\\\" It upset me so much because it is NOT true what OCD is saying, it is NOT real. This thought went away for years then came back again while on a family vacation. Again, all of us having a great time. Now seems that I can\\\'t get rid it. I have replayed in my mind over and over again that what it is saying cannot be true, it is just nonsense. I have suffered with OCD for 20 years now. It is not always bad but is triggered by happy times. My kids are my life and it is always trying to say things about them to \\\"change reality\\\" to change how things really are. (their father, our relationship, our love for each other) I just want to enjoy my family and my life without all this nonsense upsetting me. Thanks! Keep up the good work.
A.)What you really want to do is to stop giving your OCD an identity. Such as "it" is ruining my life. "It" is "you" I do understand what you are saying though, but We create these thoughts and that is all they are. Just like when we watch a movie, we get scared because our brain doesn't know the difference until we remind ourselves that we are just watching a movie, then we snap out of the trance. Well the same thing, when you have an OCD thought, it's like you are watching a movie in your mind, recognize this and remind yourself that you are just watching a mind movie. Let the movie keep playing, don't try to turn it off, but you can look away and you can do that by focusing on something else. When you try to focus on something else and the thought seems to keep intruding into your life, remind yourself that it is just like a movie and that you don't have to be afraid or react with fear because it is not real. It seems that you already know that it is not real, but it feels so real, just like when we watch a scary movie and we actually feel fear. This kind of thinking has always helped me to separate these thoughts from thoughts that I should give attention to like my family and my work. Remember the movie...
