I think about what would happen if my parents died...

Q.) I think about what would happen if my parents died every night and often during the day. Thinking about it so much, I almost wish it would happen and I crave the sympathy and attention I would get from teachers and church leaders and friends. I keep saying over and over to my self \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'my parents will not die this year\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\' but it doesn\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t work. How do I stop thinking about it? it\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s driving me insane. I always harm myself if I feel like hurting others, even if I just want to verbally abuse someone. I have no compulsions though so know one knows I\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'m like this. It took me a year to get a diagnosis of aspergers syndrome so I don\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t trust the psychiatrists any more. They never do what they say they will. I get counselling but I\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'m too scared to share this with him incase he thinks I\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'ll be a murderer, I can\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t tell anyone. How do I stop?

A.) I used to have similar thoughts, as a lot of people. The reason that it's not commonly heard of is because most people don't share these scary thoughts, thinking that they will be baker acted or something. I can tell you this though, the fact that you are worried about it means that you are normal! This took me a while to get, but once I got it, It was like a light bulb lit up above my head just like in the cartoons. You see, once you see that this is just a fear, you no longer have to be afraid of it anymore. Most people think that a fear they have is something wrong with them and that is why they are so afraid! Once you realize that this is just a fear, well, that's easy to forget now, because fears are just made up, and yes our brain messes with us, all of us, normal people alike, it's just how it works. We are made in such a way that things we don't want to think about stick in our minds. That's just how it works! So you no longer have to hurt yourself. You are a child of God and He loves you and you are fearfully and wonderfully made!

So take action: When you have this fear, remind yourself that it is just a fear and that the normal human brain has a tendency to make us think about that which we don't want to. You are normal.

Obsessive compulsive disorder help!

Q.) I am now 30 years old and ever since I was in grade 3, I have had a tendency to tense up the back of my neck and scalp and inner ears, and the area above the ears, tensing my diaphragm thus breathe very irregularly, every other 30 seconds when I\\\'m awake, i would say. I\\\'ve had to consciously remind myself to slow down, take a deep breathe and not think about doing that, but that would last for a few minutes before I start that annoying habit again. It has caused me severe tension headaches and stiff shoulders which no masseuse or doctor could relieve for more than a day. Please help. Thank you!

A.) I used to focus on my breathing and I would feel like I would pass out and this was very disturbing for me. What a doctor did tell me was that if I passed out, my body would take over my breathing for me because it is involuntary when we are not conscious. Knowing this helped me to not fear it as much, knowing my brain would do the right thing no matter how afraid I was. Another thing that I did was some serious diversion. How I did this was, I would lie down in a comfortable position and I would watch a movie and try to notice the details in the movie, or I would play chess. A really strong diversion is to do minus problems in your head that requires you to think, like 17-9 or 22-6 or even addition, 35+7 or 12+35. These things require your consciousness and you cannot fully focus on your feelings while focusing on these things. These things work quickly. Another thing that I did was embrace these feelings, reminding yourself that they are only sensations and you can say to yourself, bring it on. Notice the little tinglings or pains or pressures and think about how your body is just reacting to anxiety by creating these little sensations. They cannot hurt you, they are just interesting. I also did this, I would say to myself, I am strong, I am healthy, I am brave. I also said different things that would come to mind, always say something that is in the present, don't say, I will be strong, no say what you want to be in the present tense, like if you already are, say I am strong, say I am healthy completely. Take control over what you want in your life by speaking it into your life. Stop being a bully to yourself and stand up to yourself and tell yourself how it's going to be...

Stop the obsessive compulsive thoughts!

Q.) Mostly my OCD flares up at a time when I am having a wonderful happy event. Some thought is going to pop up that will \\\"ruin\\\" the happy occassion. My wedding, someone elses name popped into my head. This devasted me for years. It is someone that I don\\\'t even like. My husband mentions one day while looking at a picture of our daughter that she looks like an ex boyfriend of mine whom I have had no contact with since we broke up before I met my husband. He says it jokingly, but OCD now tells me in thoughts \\\"maybe he isn\\\'t her father...\\\" It upset me so much because it is NOT true what OCD is saying, it is NOT real. This thought went away for years then came back again while on a family vacation. Again, all of us having a great time. Now seems that I can\\\'t get rid it. I have replayed in my mind over and over again that what it is saying cannot be true, it is just nonsense. I have suffered with OCD for 20 years now. It is not always bad but is triggered by happy times. My kids are my life and it is always trying to say things about them to \\\"change reality\\\" to change how things really are. (their father, our relationship, our love for each other) I just want to enjoy my family and my life without all this nonsense upsetting me. Thanks! Keep up the good work.

A.)What you really want to do is to stop giving your OCD an identity. Such as "it" is ruining my life. "It" is "you" I do understand what you are saying though, but We create these thoughts and that is all they are. Just like when we watch a movie, we get scared because our brain doesn't know the difference until we remind ourselves that we are just watching a movie, then we snap out of the trance. Well the same thing, when you have an OCD thought, it's like you are watching a movie in your mind, recognize this and remind yourself that you are just watching a mind movie. Let the movie keep playing, don't try to turn it off, but you can look away and you can do that by focusing on something else. When you try to focus on something else and the thought seems to keep intruding into your life, remind yourself that it is just like a movie and that you don't have to be afraid or react with fear because it is not real. It seems that you already know that it is not real, but it feels so real, just like when we watch a scary movie and we actually feel fear. This kind of thinking has always helped me to separate these thoughts from thoughts that I should give attention to like my family and my work. Remember the movie...

Hi, well as far as my...

Stop your rituals today!

Q.) Hi, well as far as my OCD goes, I really do feel all alone. When I was first diagnosed with it, I did not believe it. Even though I have an intense fear of germs and contamination, still I didnt want to believe I had OCD because some of my symptoms are very unlike the symptoms described as being an OCD issue. Then I turned to the internet and asked around to people that also have OCD, and describing the symptoms I have and if they go through the same thing. No one that I asked has this problem. Well anyways, my question is kinda embarassing, but Ill try, so here goes.....I dont know, but I guess what Im asking is, can this actually be a rare and very unique symptom, or can it be something that alot of OCDers go through and I just met anyone who does yet? Ok, my main OCD symptom is that, well, I have a spitting obsession. But unlike how guys just spit because its in their nature, my problem is like 10 times worse. I spit 24/7. Well, what I mean is, I carry a large glass with me to spit in and take it everywhere I go, even into stores, because my compulsion to spit usually happens every 5-10 minutes. If I tried to hold it in, it builds up, and this scares me and I freak out because I CAN NOT swallow it for any reason. If I do, my body will be severely poisoned, and I could die. I can clearly see that this drives my family crazy, but I just cant help it! Please help me on this issue. Is this very rare, or do many people have this same issue? Pleeeeeeeease reply soon ok? Thanks for reading. Im desperate for answers. Its impossible for me to sleep at night because of this OCD issue, so please help in any way that you can!!!!! Many, many thanks to you for taking the time to read this.

Q.) There are many rituals that are embarrassing. You don't have to worry about that aspect. Just think about where your saliva comes from. God made our bodies the way they are. There are only a few things that a human needs to survive and you know that spitting is not one of them. I swallow my saliva all the time and I'm not dead yet. Sometimes we need to say our fears out loud. Think of how many people you know that don't do this ritual. Think of how many of them are alive. Your brain should be able to see that you don't need to spit. You should swallow right as you are reading this. If you have anxiety, know that in your stomach there is hydrochloric acid which can melt most things. It can definitely destroy saliva, so it's impossible for you to be poisoned. God would not give us saliva if it could poison us, so you know it can't. What you need to do is just swallow, see how it's uncomfortable but it's not going to kill you. Even when the fear is strong, just know that you will live through it, I guarantee it!

our 12 year old son...

Free members area >

Q.) Our 12 yr old son we think is suffering OCD. We are at the point of taking him to the Doctors but wish WE could do more to help him. Is there a chemical imbalance we should check out first?

A.) I would definitely take him to the doctors to rule out everything else. He should also do a formal diagnosis or be able to refer you to a counselor if need be. However somethings that you as parents can do is make sure that you feed him organic food. More and more foods are filled with preservatives, pesticide residues, even in our water are harmful chemicals. I would also recommend distilled water or water purified by reverse osmosis. Kids are more prone to be affected by these chemicals as their bodies are still growing and forming. We want our cells to act the way they are supposed to, but we don't want to give them the right fuel and we wonder why they don't work. It took me forever to give up twinkies and hohos and colas! Oh man, I do love me a good cola. but seriously, once you go organic, these old foods start to taste too sweet and it's kinda disgusting.

As far as emotionally, I would be there for him. Tell him he can do anything he puts his mind to. Praise him when he has little victories and this will pave the way for big victories. Be patient with him and help him gradually. The Bible says that if you teach a kid in the way he should go, even though he turn away, he'll come back to the principles you have put in his mind.

Q.) How do you forgive yourself for OCD behavior that caused you to lose a loved one?

Free members area >

A.) You did not ask for OCD consciously, so it's not your fault. You CANNOT blame yourself for something you had no control over. Many people, almost all OCD sufferers never see it coming. You literally go from feeling normal to "what the heck is wrong with me!" Beating yourself up about anything is unproductive, your energy is better spent bringing and attracting blessings into your life. Think about what you want today. Ask for anything in your life to yourself. Say, I want to have a great day today. I usually say the line, "Make it a great day!" in my e-mails. This person once sent me an e-mail with that in it and I really connected with that statement. It is up to us to have a great day! So today, I want to have a great day. I'm sure you do to. Sometimes things happen in this world and we don't know why, and that's ok. We're only supposed to know today what we know today. Let the past be past, and stop looking behind, but look forward. We head in the direction we are looking.

A.) Hey abhishek, I was in your same position two years ago and that is exactly why I created the free membership site. Feel free to use all the tools on there. Many people have found that this blog is one of the most helpful aspects of the site and there aren't any other places that I know of where people get most of their questions answered for free. I can appreciate the fact that your family is not understanding, as mine wasn't either. What I did was just focus on what I wanted. I said to myself that I wanted to be OCD free and I demanded it from the universe, from God and from myself. I believed that it could happen and so it did! That is the whole key abhishek. By your faith you are healed. But faith without works is dead. You need to back up your faith with actions. This morning I had an OCD thought from the past, I quickly realized that it was an OCD thought and I dismissed it like a person without OCD would and I went about my morning happy. Sometimes these thoughts will come up, they happen to everyone, but when you can quickly dismiss it because you know it's OCD and you know that the anxiety can't hurt you, you will be free of it. Over time you develop a thick skin for these kinds of thoughts and it gets harder and harder for the thoughts to affect you. Keep at it, I know you can do it!
